The unspoilt rural township of Dungog serves a fertile grazing district on the rich soils of the Lower Hunter Valley and a growing tourist industry centred on the area's waterways and the wilderness escape of Barrington Tops World Heritage National Park. A World Heritage area with a diversity of wildlife and environments, Barrington Tops offers both cool sub-alpine woodlands and extensive sub-tropical rainforests. Walkers will discover forest tracks leading to beauty spots, waterfalls and lookouts.
The Shire of Dungog has four surrounding towns - Clarencetown, Dungog, Gresford and Paterson that retain the country charm of yesteryear with wide streets and historic buildings. Within Dungog, Dowling Street, the main street, has been declared an urban conservation area. In this street the Old School of Arts building houses the local museum.
