Port Hedland is one of Australia's largest ports and the major centre for Western Australia's iron ore industry. The general port area is open to the public every day and on most days visitors may see the world's biggest ore carriers moving in and out. In total, more than 70 million tonnes of product, worth in excess of 3 billion dollars is shipped each year.
The beach near Cooke Point Caravan Park is the best place to see the romantic phenomenon known as the 'Stairway to the Moon'. Three days a month between March and October, as the full moon rises over the horizon, its rays hit pools of water that have been left by the receding tide. For about fifteen minutes the reflections create a beautiful illusion.
