Bathurst is a thriving rural community with industries as diverse as vegetable growing, engineering and education. The main campus of Charles Sturt University, two large TAFE campuses, four private and two public high schools make education the city's largest industry. Australia's oldest inland city, Bathurst was settled soon after the Blue Mountains were first crossed in 1813, and named by Governor Macquarie in 1815. Today, this era lives on in heritage properties such as Old Government Cottage and Miss Traill's House and Garden. For those who prefer the more contemporary, Bathurst is also home to the Mount Panorama racing circuit; each October the city comes alive to the roar of V8 Super Cars. Racing History may also be found at the National Motor Racing Museum, also on Mount Panorama.
