This far western Darling River town is the gateway to the real outback and the main centre for an extensive pastoral district. The construction of a weir on the Darling River in 1941 provided sufficient water for irrigation in this arid area, allowing crops to flourish; today, the area is known as much for citrus fruit and cotton as it is for wool.
Bourke has many historic buildings that are well worth visiting, and the Back O'Bourke Exhibition Centre is an ideal place for visitors to begin exploring.
