Renowned as one of the world's great mining centres, the city of Broken Hill lies in the Barrier Ranges, almost as far west as it is possible to go in New South Wales. Closer to and relating more to Adelaide than Sydney, the city operates on central time.
Although mining has been wound down in recent years, Broken Hill remains a major mining centre. It is also a growing tourist destination, attracting visitors with its colourful mining history and very scenic surrounds. Since the 1970's and 80's, the unique beauty of the desert ranges has attracted well known and respected artists such as the late Pro Hart, and today, artists' showrooms and galleries are a feature of the city.
