Map of Canowindra, NSW 2804

Hot air balloons floating overhead have earned this Central West town the title 'Balloon Capital of Australia'. Canowindra (pronounced Ca-noun-dra) lies in a natural basin on the Belubula River, where the weather is almost always calm and conditions are usually ideal for balloon flights that give a bird's-eye view of rolling hills and patchwork paddocks.

One of the great fossil sites in Australia was discovered between Canowindra and Gooloogong in 1956, and today, ancient fossils of complete fish specimens are showcased in the Age of Fishes Museum, in Gaskill Street. The town's main street, Gaskill follows the route of an old bullock track; wide with a bend, and lined by early commercial buildings that are classified by the National Trust.
