Condobolin lies on the Lachlan River, near the geographical centre of the State. It is the service centre for a pastoral district that produces wheat, wool, lamb, fruit and mixed nuts. The town's name comes from the Aboriginal name for hopbush, a native bush with fruit resembling hops found in the area. Gum Bend Lake, four kilometres west, is a small recreation area for swimming, sailing, windsurfing and limited power boating. It was created by diverting water from the Lachlan River, which runs through the town; the Lachlan is popular for fishing. Travel eight kilometres north on Melrose Road to find Mount Tilga, which is claimed as the true geographic centre of New South Wales. A dirt road goes halfway up the hill then there is a climb to the top for views of the western plains.
