This southern Riverina town is situated on the winding Edward River and surrounded by farmlands and sheep stations. Rice has now joined wool as one of the region's main products and it is processed at Deniliquin Mill, the largest rice mill in the southern hemisphere. The Peppin Heritage Centre is a good place to start in Deniliquin; built in 1862, it was originally the George Street School. It reopened as a museum in 1988 as a museum with audiovisual displays of Deniliquin's history, the Peppin Merino and the rice industry. Open space is plentiful in Deniliquin. A series of parks runs through the centre of town, and Deniliquin State Forest and extensive recreation areas line the east bank of the Edward River. At the Island Sanctuary, on the edge of the State Forest, native animals and birds roam freely.
