The gently undulating land surrounding this Castlereagh River town supports one of the best wheat-growing and wool-producing areas in New South Wales. Known as the 'Town of Windmills", Gilgandra once had a skyline dotted with windmills. Most were removed when town water was connected, but as a reminder of times past some of the old windmills now form an Avenue of Windmills from Coo-ee Park along to the river bank picnic area. At the Gilgandra Coo-ee Heritage Centre visitors may learn about the famous Coo-ee March, see displays of local history and enjoy travelling exhibitions.
