Gloucester lies in the sheltered valley of the Gloucester River surrounded by fine agricultural land ideal for beef and dairying. The main access road is the Bucketts Way, named after the unusual chain of hills known as The Bucketts that forms a backdrop to the town. Gloucester is described as the 'Base Camp of the Barringtons', the high 'tops' where a diversity of altitudes and an enormous range of flora are protected by Barrington Tops National Park.
