Called the Lilac City and claimed as Australia's first inland city, Goulburn is the major centre on the Southern Tablelands. The busy Hume Highway bypass has created a relaxing and friendly place to spend a few days. The undulating tablelands surrounding Goulburn are famous for wool production and there are several well-known studs in the area. Goulburn is well-known as the home of the 'Big Merino', now located on the Hume Highway near Sowerby Street.
Dominating the city is the Rocky Hill War Memorial built by public subscription in 1923. The 20m high tower gives panoramic views of Goulburn and houses a military museum in its base. Also worth visiting is The Old Goulburn Brewery complex on Bungonia Road.
