Travellers today find the historic town of Grenfell an interesting and nostalgic stop on the Mid Western Highway. Grenfell's streets feature some of the finest examples of heritage architecture in rural Australia. The poet and storywriter, Henry Lawson is Grenfell's most famous son, having been born in a tent on the Grenfell goldfields on 17 June 1867. His father, a miner from Mudgee, brought his family with him to look for gold. The spot is indicated by the Henry Lawson Park & Monument, to the south of town, off the road to Young.
