The centre of prosperous wool and meat-producing country on the Murrumbidgee River, Gundagai has always been an important stop for travellers. From Jack O'Hagen's popular song Along the Road to Gundagai, local sculptor Frank Rusconi created the Dog on the Tuckerbox memorial on the Hume Highway 'five miles' or nine kilometres from Gundagai. Opposite the Dog on the Tuckerbox, in Snake Gully, the quintessential Australian characters Dad, Dave, Mum and Mabel from Steele Rudd's On Our Selection are immortalised in copper.
