Midway between Cessnock and Maitland, Kurri Kurri is the centre for a region where agriculture takes its place beside industry. It was once a coal-mining town but the majority of the residents are now employed at the aluminium smelter. The grand hotels to be found around the town and region are a reminder of the wealth of the coal age.
Although coal mining has declined, Kurri Kurri is a thriving little town. The shopping centre in Lang Street has been revitalised, while sporting facilities include tennis, squash, bowls and there is a very good golf course. Attractions include the Sir Edgeworth David Memorial Museum, in the grounds of Kurri Kurri High School, which displays a collection of memorabilia covering daily life and work in the coalfields region.
