The only place in the world where black opals are mined, Lightning Ridge is an outback New South Wales town located only 60 kilometres from the Queensland border. Opals are what this town is about; visitors can start fossicking for opals out the back of the Information Centre, go on Opal Tours, down a Walk in Mine, or see opal showrooms, some with opalised fossils. Other attractions include galleries and curios such as the Bottle House.
After a hard day mining, the artesian bore baths are a must. Open 24 hours, the naturally hot baths are the perfect place to soak and enjoy the night sky.
