Maclean is a fishing centre on the Clarence River and the southern gateway to Australia's sugar-growing region which stretches north to beyond Cairns. Panoramic views of the town, coast, bushland, river islands and canefields can be seen from Maclean Lookout, two kilometres east at the top of Wharf Street. Known as the 'Scottish Town in Australia', this little town celebrates the birthplace of many of its settlers with an annual Highland Gathering at Easter. Additionally, look out for the more than 100 telegraph poles painted in clan tartans, and the street signs with Gaelic translations. Rocks from Scotland are incorporated into the Scottish Cairn located in Herb Stanford Memorial Park.
