Situated on the Hunter River, 35 kilometres upstream from the Port of Newcastle, Maitland began as two towns - West Maitland and East Maitland. Of the two, East Maitland holds the most historic interest because, unlike West Maitland, it was a planned town, built above flood level with spacious streets and fine public buildings.
Maitland and its surrounding townships have a number of popular tourist attractions to suit both the young and the young at heart. Major attractions include Maitland Gaol, Walka Recreation & Wildlife Reserve, the historic village of Morpeth, a number of historic homes, Maitland City Art Gallery, the Maitland Heritage Mall and the Hunter vineyards.
