This fishing and tourist town lies in a sheltered position at the northern entrance to Merimbula Lake, 25 kilometres north of Eden, on the far South Coast. Conditions for fishing, prawning and surfing are excellent and attract many visitors to both Merimbula and its sister town Pambula, on the other side of the lake.
The beaches, lakes and surrounding national parks are an attractive combination of natural features. There are three surf beaches and sheltered lake beaches. Fishing is popular on lakes Merimbula and Pambula - boats can be hired and both lakes have cruise boats. Reef and game fishing trips leave from Merimbula Lake and between late October and mid-December there are whale-watching excursions.
