Narrabri lies in the fertile Namoi River valley, at the junction of Narrabri Creek and the Namoi River. The rich black soil of the valley supports a diversity of agricultural activities but cotton is by far the district's major industry. Visitors may see Narrabri's involvement in this industry first-hand at the Australian Cotton Centre, next to the Visitor Information Centre.
Maitland Street, the main street, and Dewhurst and Bowen Streets retain the majority of the town's original buildings. Highlights include the Old Gaol, which dates from 1882 and is now a local history museum. Outside of Narrabri, the CSIRO Australia Telescope National Facility is located at Culgoora, 23 kilometres west.
