An administrative, commercial, cultural and industrial centre at the mouth of the Hunter River, Newcastle is one of the busiest and largest ports in the country, the second largest metropolitan area in New South Wales and the sixth city of Australia. Newcastle has some famous beaches, the best known being Nobbys, an ideal family beach. Newcastle and Merewether beaches both have large saltwater baths, which are patrolled and floodlit at night. King Edward Park, behind Newcastle Beach, is a local favourite with its sunken garden, band rotunda (1898) and the obelisk (1850) marking the site of Newcastle's first mill, as well as delightful leafy walks merging with ocean and beach views.
