Scone is an attractive Upper Hunter Valley town with wide streets shaded by big old trees. The importance of horses to the district is represented by the graceful sculpture of a mare and foal that stands in Elizabeth Park, a pleasant spot for a rest stop at the northern end of town. Scone is the commercial centre for an area of beautiful country renowned for its prosperous horse stud farms, dairying and pastoral land. Kentucky in the USA is the only horse-breeding region in the world larger than Scone Shire. Approximately fifteen kilometres east of town is Lake Glenbawn, an all-round recreation spot offering great fishing, water-skiing, swimming, sailing, horse riding, golf, tennis and bushwalking. Twenty kilometres to the north of Scone a nature reserve surrounds Burning Mountain, where an underground coal seam causes plumes of smoke.
