Sheltered in the lush Tumut Valley on the south-western slopes of the Snowy Mountains and surrounded by forests and rich pastoral and agricultural land, Tumut is the gateway to a vast mountain playground and the commercial centre of the district.
Early settlers planted thousands of Lombardy poplars and other deciduous trees in the region. In autumn the parks and gardens blaze with the rich colours of these trees, especially the poplars which have been adopted as a symbol of the town. Each April, these trees are celebrated in the Festival of the Falling Leaf.
