Rejuvenated since it was bypassed by the highway, Yass is a quiet rural town on the Yass River, not far from where the Barton Highway to Canberra meets the Hume Highway. This interesting and historic town services undulating countryside famous for its merino sheep studs. The Yass & District Museum shows a good representation of the area's history in photographs. To the east of Yass lies the cemetery where explorer Hamilton Hume and his wife Elizabeth are buried. Yass is also known for its cool climate wines. Mostly of the wineries can be found in the Murrumbateman area, south of Yass, with many open for tasting and cellar door sales.
