Jabiru is on the Arnhem Highway‚ two hundred and fifty-two kilometres from Darwin. The town was established after uranium mining began in the area‚ and is situated on thirteen square kilometres of leased land in Kakadu National Park. The Park is the main attraction in town‚ and is also home to the Bowali Visitors Centre and Marrawuddi Gallery. Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn is built in the shape of a crocodile‚ a totem of the local Gagudju people.
Arnhem Highway‚ the main tourist route from Darwin passes the superb waterlily-covered Fogg Dam‚ Window on the Wetlands display centre‚ Djukbinj and Mary River National Parks. Other attractions out of Jabiru but still relatively close include Aboriginal rock-art sites at Nourlangie Rock and Ubirr and numerous billabongs with prolific wildlife. Yellow Water‚ fifty-five kilometres south-east‚ is a spectacular large billabong‚ where tourist cruises guarantee sightings of waterbirds and other wildlife‚ including crocodiles.
