Katherine was a small and isolated centre for the surrounding pastoral properties before Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) became a major tourist attraction. Tourism and Tindal RAAF Base‚ seventeen kilometres south‚ are now principal employers in this rapidly growing town but the original beef cattle properties‚ the Mount Todd gold mine‚ the largest dairy in the Territory‚ and horticulture production that includes a mango plantation and an orchid nursery are also of major economic importance.
Located sixty kilometres from Katherine town‚ Edith Falls is a permanent waterfall on the edge of the Arnhem Land escarpment. Cutta Cutta Caves‚ and the five hundred million-year-old limestone caves twenty-nine kilometres south‚ are the home of the rare orange horseshoe bat. Flora River Nature Reserve‚ one hundred kilometres west‚ features unique and quite spectacular tufa dams‚ created when natural grasses form small dams across the Flora River – basic camping facilities are provided.
