Map of Tennant Creek, NT 0860

Billed as the ‘Heart of Gold’‚ the friendly‚ modern town of Tennant Creek is located deep in Australia’s inland outback at the junction of the Stuart and Barkly Highways. Tennant Creek is the site of Australia’s last genuine gold rush with the first flitter of gold in the early 1930’s. Its golden history of mining‚ pastoral and Aboriginal culture is waiting to be discovered all over again. Just to the east of town‚ along Peko Road‚ visitors will find the Battery Hill Mining Centre‚ which draws on this colourful mining past.

See the Gold Stamp Battery ore crushing plant‚ where the ‘stampers’ come alive during daily tours‚ and take an underground Mine Tour‚ which offers a realistic experience of the extraction process. Travel a further two kilometres from Battery Hill and view the boundless horizons from the Bill Allen Lookout.
