Balaklava services a rich pastoral area in the fertile region where the Adelaide Plains become the mid-north. Situated some ninety-two kilometres from Adelaide, this wheatbelt town is the administrative centre for Wakefield Regional Council. It is a pretty town for visitors, featuring a number of attractive old sandstone houses and a pleasant walk along the river. Balaklava is home to two museums, Urlwin Park Agricultural Museum and Centenary Hall Museum. For the sports enthusiast there is a wide range of facilities available, including swimming during the summer months. To the north of town, at Whitwarta, the gliding club was the first in Australia to own its airfield. For those who would raise the adrenalin level by watching rather than participating, Balaklava now hosts South Australia's richest provincial horse racing meetings.
