Wind surfing, water-skiing, sailing, canoeing, fishing or enjoying a round of golf are just some of the holiday options available at the thriving Riverland township of Barmera. A picturesque setting and the beautiful beaches and clear water of Lake Bonney, discovered by overlanders Charles Bonney and Joseph Hawdon in 1838, attract many visitors. Canoes, paddleboats and jet skis can be hired and there are launching ramps for those with a boat.
For those who enjoy wine, Bonnyview Winery is situated right in town, while Banrock Station Wine and Wetlands Centre is fourteen kilometres to the west. This environmentally-conscious winery has, together with other groups such as Landcare Australia, worked to restore the surrounding wetlands. Today, interpretive walking trails help visitors enjoy this environment.
