Like most Riverland towns Berri owes its existence to irrigation. Known as the 'Heart of the Riverland', Berri has grown to become an important regional centre and is the industrial business centre of the Riverland. Being centrally located allows visitors a base from which to tour the Riverland and surrounding regions. The name Berri is believed to come from the Aboriginal word 'beri-beri' meaning 'wide bend in the river'.
