The ultimate escape from big city pressures, Coffin Bay acts as holiday retreat for many families. The township is located west of Port Lincoln on the shores of one of the most beautiful estuaries in Australia. Visitors and locals can view vast expanses of meandering waterways with bays, channels and inlets. Pleasure seekers fish, boat, sail, swim, water ski, skin dive and wind surf in Coffin Bay. The rather ominous and unusual name for the area was given by Matthew Flinders in 1802 to honour his friend Sir Isaac Coffin. However, it could have been a description of the many shipwrecks and accidental drownings that have occurred on the exposed coastline throughout the years. The area also has a long history of oyster farming, dating to the 1840's; today, visitors may explore the Oyster Walk, named by council as a reminder of town history. This fully accessible path meanders through eight kilometres of coastal vegetation and allows relaxing views of the picturesque coastline.
