Map of Hahndorf, SA 5245

One of the most unique towns in the Adelaide Hills‚ Hahndorf is renowned as the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia. With the first pioneers arriving from Prussia in 1838‚ Hahndorf today has echoes of that time in some of the older buildings‚ with their steeply pitched roofs and wattle and daub construction.

Hahndorf is a very popular town for visitors‚ with plenty of cafes‚ restaurants‚ gift and craft shops. Attractions include the Beerenburg Strawberry Farm‚ where strawberries may be picked in season from October to May; Hahndorf Farm Barn‚ popular for families‚ with the opportunity to meet and pet the baby chickens‚ alpacas and miniature horses‚ and the Hahndorf Gallery‚ which exhibits work by local artists. Hahndorf was for many years the home of artist Sir Hans Heysen‚ and today his former home and studio‚ The Cedars‚ may be visited.
