From a small village established on the shores of Lacepede Bay in 1858, Kingston SE has grown into the regional centre for an area producing sheep, fat lambs, cattle and cropping, with some producers diversifying into viticulture and horticulture. The local cray fishing fleet and associated processing industry are also important, a fact emphasised by Larry the 'Big Lobster'.
The town is known as Kingston SE (or Kingston South East) to avoid confusion with South Australia's other Kingston - Kingston on Murray.
