This pretty little town on the Rocky River lies near the southern slopes of the Flinders Ranges. Author and poet C.J. Dennis spent the greater part of his youth here when his father owned the long-gone Beetaloo Hotel. The Laura Standard printed Dennis' first published poem in 1895 and the town retained a special place in his memory, as evidenced by the poem Laura Days written in 1932. Today, C.J. Dennis is commemorated with a large bronze statue on the southern approach to the town, and a bust in front of the Civic Centre in Hughes Street. Laura is a service town for the surrounding rural area but cottage crafts and tourism also play an important role in the local economy. Visitors to the town should look out for the locally-made Golden North Ice Cream.
