Mannum developed as a Murray River port in the early days of the river trade and is now known as the 'Birthplace of the River Murray Paddle Steamers'. It was here, in 1853, that William Randell launched the Mary Ann, and in so doing opened up a new era in trade for the colony that eventually involved dozens of paddle steamers plying the Murray Darling river system.
Mannum certainly has plenty of paddlesteamers and other cruisers, including the PS Marion (at the Dock Museum) and MV Murray Venturer. Several companies such as Jester Cruises will take visitors out on the water, a must whilst in Mannum. However, attractions in town are not limited to the river. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of Mannum Falls and marvel at the beauty of the stones on display at the Gem and Mineral Gallery.
