Minlaton today is the commercial centre for a thriving agricultural region. The district is known as the 'Barley Capital of the World', a name earned by the huge quantity of the grain grown in the area and extensive marketing by the town. Originally known as Gum Flat, for the only stand of naturally occurring red gums on the Yorke Peninsula, Minlaton's 18-hole golf course is the only place where the tall red gums that originally gave the district its name can still be seen. A pleasant town almost ringed with green, Minlaton features parks, a showground and golf course. Located in this oasis are some of the town's attractions, including a Wildlife Park and memorial to local flying ace Captain Harry Butler. The name Minlaton comes from the combination of part of the Aboriginal word minla, meaning 'sweet' and the old English ton, meaning 'town'.
