The administrative and retail hub of Mount Barker District Council and the Adelaide Hills‚ Mount Barker is a pretty yet commercial town located only twenty minutes from Adelaide. Named after the explorer Captain Collett Barker‚ Mount Barker was surveyed in 1839‚ but really grew after the establishment of a flour mill in 1844.
The town of Mount Barker is situated at the foot of its namesake; the summit of Mount Barker provides panoramic views of the area‚ and may be accessed from Springs Road or Mount Barker Summit Road. With an elevation of over five hundred metres‚ on a clear day it is possible to see as far as Mount Lofty in the north and Lake Alexandrina in the south-east. Also worth visiting is the SteamRanger vintage steam train. Based in Mount Barker‚ this popular tourist train takes regular runs down to Strathalbyn‚ Goolwa‚ Port Elliot and Victor Harbor.
