Map of Mt Gambier, SA 5290

The city of Mount Gambier spreads up the slopes of an extinct‚ three-cratered volcano rising almost two hundred metres above sea level in the southernmost corner of the State. Lakes occupy the craters of the volcano which was last active five thousand years ago. The most famous is Blue Lake which changes colour gradually from a sombre winter blue to a brilliant turquoise in November‚ slowly changing back to its winter colour in March. Caves formed in the underlying limestone are dotted throughout the region and some are even located in streets close to the CBD‚ including Umpherston Sinkhole off Jubilee Highway East‚ Cave Gardens in the city centre‚ and Engelbrecht Cave‚ lying off Jubilee Highway West.
