This large town at the geographical heart of the Limestone Coast Tourist Region has been the commercial centre of a rich rural area since the 1840's. Naracoorte also actively promotes a wide range of attractions for visitors, in particular the Naracoorte Caves in the Naracoorte Caves National Park - South Australia's only World Heritage Area. There are twenty-six known caves in the group, many of which may be visited. Some are self-guided, whilst others - including the Alexandra, Victoria Fossil and Cathedral Caves - are by guided tour only. The latter cave is accessible on an adventure tour, with torches and ladders, giving visitors the experience of walking through an undeveloped cave without lights or pathways.
