Take a wander through the township of Penola and see the many National Trust buildings and privately owned residences providing a postcard reminder of a by gone era. Travel further north and reach what is now recognized as one of Australia's premium wine regions, Coonawarra. Coonawarra was founded in 1891 by Scottish settler John Riddoch. The rich Terra Rossa soils, once part of the Australian coastline are what make the Coonawarra special, and today the area yields some of the best wine grapes in the world.
