Often referred to as the 'Crossroads of Australia', the city of Port Augusta is located in a strategic position at the head of Spencer Gulf. Major highways from the north, south, east and west meet here and the city is an important link for the Indian Pacific and Ghan railway lines. Port Augusta was named in 1852, after Lady Augusta Young, wife of Governor Sir Henry Edward Fox Young. An interesting attraction in Port Augusta is the Wadlata Outback Centre, which includes an interpretive centre, visitor information, cafe and gift shop. The Interpretive Centre covers the Flinders Ranges area from evolution over fifteen million years ago, through to the present day. With 3D exhibits, sound, pictures and video, visitors can learn about the Aboriginal Dreamtime, join European explorers as they venture into the outback, and see early pioneers open up the land for settlement.
