A busy prosperous town located in the centre of the Barossa Valley, Tanunda grew out of the village of Langmeil, the valley's second German settlement, in 1843. The small village of Bethany, lying south-east, was the first to be established by German settlers a year earlier.
Tanunda is the location of the Barossa Wine & Visitor Information Centre, an important stop where, as well as information, tourists can discover the history of the Barossa and also the process from vine to wine in the interpretive centre. Visitors need not go far to make a start on the famous Barossa wineries. Several are located in Tanunda itself, including Chateau Tanunda Estate, Richmond Grove and Langmeil Winery.
