The third largest city in South Australia is located on the eastern shore of Eyre Peninsula. A Mediterranean-style climate offers around three hundred days of sunshine each year. The city's environment is best described by its slogan: "Whyalla - Where the Outback meets the Sea".
The Whyalla Maritime Museum displays artifacts that relates to the World War II story of four warships built in Whyalla in 1941/1942, history of shipbuilding, maritime heritage and natural history of upper Spencer Gulf. The museum also exhibits the largest land-locked ship in Australia, former HMAS Whyalla, the first ship constructed in Whyalla and also the first modern warship built in South Australia.
