Map of Beaconsfield, TAS 7270

A quiet and historic town located on the West Tamar Highway‚ Beaconsfield is dominated by the ruins of several impressive brick buildings which give an insight into its past as a thriving gold township.

Limestone mining was the first industry and this led to the discovery of gold in 1869‚ from which time the small town began to prosper. Between 1904 and 1914‚ when seepage caused its closure‚ the Tasmanian Gold Mine‚ the State’s biggest‚ rewarded miners with ore to the value of more than $6 million. Reopened in the 1980's‚ the site shot to worldwide prominence in 2006 when one miner was killed and two were trapped for 14 days one kilometre underground. Today‚ a viewing platform gives visitors a look at the lift from which Brant Webb and Todd Russell amazingly emerged on foot. Next to this site is the Grubb Shaft Gold and Heritage Museum with mining memorabilia and artefacts.
