The timber town of Smithton is situated at the mouth of the Duck River on the far north west coast of Tasmania. It is the administrative centre of the Circular Head council area and the headquarters of one of Tasmania's foremost forestry areas.
A lookout tower on Tier Hill (also known as Apex Lookout) at the northern end of Massey Street provides a panoramic view towards Bass Strait, taking in Duck Bay, Robbins Island, Three Hummock Island, Montagu and Woolnorth.
