Avoca is located at the base of the Pyrenees Ranges, named after the famous mountain range in Europe. Gold was discovered nearby in 1852, and in 1853 the population reached 14,000. By the 1870's the gold was all but gone, and the population dropped; it was at this time that grapes were grown for the first time in this area. In 1966 the French company Chateau Remy produced their first vintage at what is now the Blue Pyrenees Estate, and today there are 17 vineyards in the Pyrenees region, many with cellar doors.
