Bairnsdale lies on the Mitchell River flats at the tip of Lake King, serving the wool and cattle industries and the southern lakes system. The district is referred to as the Victorian Riviera, as winter temperatures can be up to 6 C warmer than those in Melbourne.
As the gateway to the Gippsland Lakes region, Bairnsdale makes an ideal base for touring, as well as having many attractions of its own. These include the magnificent St Mary's Catholic Church, with Italian-style wall and ceiling murals and McLeods Morass, a deep freshwater marsh and reserve where more than 130 species of wildlife have been recorded.
