Located on the estuary of the Barwon River, this self-proclaimed 'village by the sea' is a popular fishing, boating and swimming holiday spot. Now well-known as the sleepy holiday town from the popular Australian drama 'SeaChange', Barwon Heads is exactly that - a relaxing place to get away from it all. Thirteenth Beach (on the western edge of the township) and Bancoora Beach (10km west) receive the full fury of Bass Strait, making ideal surfing conditions; calmer waters for family swimming can be found at the mouth of the Barwon River.
Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary, in Taits Road, is home to a variety of animals and birds as well as koalas. A highlight is the hospital where sick animals are nursed back to health. Barwon Heads is linked to neighbouring Ocean Grove, 2km away on the eastern side of the river, by Victoria's longest wooden bridge.
