Victoria's second largest city is a deepwater port and industrial centre on the shores of Corio Bay. It is a pleasant, well-planned city with generous areas reserved for parks and open space, mostly located beside the Bay and behind the city centre on the banks of the Barwon River. It was first explored by Hume and Hovell in 1824, and in the 1850's was Melbourne's serious rival in a contest to become Victoria's capital city.
