Kilmore claims to be Victoria's oldest inland town, being first settled in 1841 by overlanders who established a stopping place here on the route from New South Wales to Port Phillip. The settlement flourished when the Beechworth goldrushes brought more people to Victoria and continued to prosper as a transit point for goods and people moving between the southern coastal plains and the north.
