The Kyneton district offers visitors a blend of natural attractions, colourful history and the facilities of a progressive rural centre just an easy hour's drive from Melbourne. The town is a living time capsule. More bluestone buildings remain here than in anywhere else in Victoria, with the town hall, railway station, hospital, courthouse and a number of churches, commercial buildings and private homes built of the blue/grey basalt rock that was mined nearby.
